Shorts don’t normally just “happen” Either via vibration, loose connections, metal edges chaffing through wires, poor routing and poor planning. I like to go overkill when it comes to insulating and isolating wires, something learned from my days spent messing with 4x4s and off road vehicles. I came up with some habits that have served me well when wiring my cars: Wire it like a fiberglass car. That is to say, run dedicated ground wires to every component that might normally just be grounded to the body or chassis.

You can use it to measure very small electrical currents or very large ones. However, if you are a beginner, only use it to measure small currents. Large electrical currents can be dangerous. Connecting an ammeter to measure current only takes a few minutes or less. For example, they might just attach the two probes to the wire. The key to connecting an ammeter correctly is remembering that the connection is such that current will flow through the ammeter, as if it was a wire.
Here is a simple schematic I whipped up showing the factory ammeter wiring. The distance between connection of the discharge side of the ammeter and the charge side of the ammeter on the solenoid-to-battery cable is about /8″ but the cable between these points is NOT resisted.
An ammeter must have all the current the vehicle uses except starter running through it to read it properly. If you connect it between the alt and batt it may only read alt output and not show discharge. Also the wire gauges specified are way too low. Fine for an older vehicle putting out 30 amps,but not most newer ones. Hence the reason for shunted type ammeters. They are also alot safer as not all that amperage is running through the vehicle.
To have it work correctly,you have to have the ammeter between the alternator and all the acc loads. If all your power wires for the vehicle are coming off of the alt then it will work fine in between the alt and battery. If some of your loads come off the battery,or starter solenoid post like most vehicles ,then this will not work. The best way to do it,if it’s on your 85 Chevy truck,is pull off the starter solenoid nut,and remove all the wires except the battery cable.
Pull them up through to the top of the engine and remove that stupid steel heat shield tube they run through. Then using another piece of 6 or 8 gauge,run a wire from the alternator positve to the little black plastic junction terminal on the firewall beside the wiper motor ,and connect it and all the wires you pulled from the starter solenoid.

Leaving that disconnected won’t affect the charging system, but you’ll want to make sure the connector doesn’t short to ground against any sheetmetal. It’s un-fused and hot at all times. The other wire from the A terminal that goes up through the harness is probably where power is coming from. To make sure, disconnect the battery negative cable first, positive second as always and test for continuity between the inside of that little plug coming off the A terminal, and the positive battery cable.
That will tell you if it ends up being connected, without having to peel back your harness.

Refer to the below figure. Troubleshooting the ammeter circuit can be difficult. The following applies to cars equiped with alternators. In the Chassis Service Manual there will be a simplified diagram of the charging system similar in part to that show above. Possibly the biggest mistake that people make associated with the ammeter circuit is not turning the ignition switch to either ACC or ON when trying to decide if the ammeter is showing proper discharge.
You can perform the following test and see if it makes a diference. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes until the ammeter reads close to zero. Shut off the engine and with the ignition switch OFF, turn on the high beam lights. Make a note of the ammeter reading. Turn off the headlights. Turn the ignition switch to ACC and again turn on the high beams.
The amount of discharge shown by the ammeter should be about twice, or more, what it was before. By referring to the above diagram, it can be seen that the ammeter reads the difference in voltage between the battery and the alternator. The wire that goes directly from the battery to the alternator and appears to short out the ammeter is a meter shunt.

Rod, for an ammeter to indicate the net charging curent INTO the battery or discharging current OUT OF the battery the ammeters SUPPLY side wires to the hot battery post while its other LOAD side wires to the genny/alternators output PLUS it feeds all loads such as lights or ignition.

The opposite also means that the alternator is bad. If the voltmeter shows that the amps is up to around 16 or more, it means that the alternator is not regulating the power well and needs to be replaced.

Basically, you can buy the volt and ampere gauge or meter at around RM and install it your self. It is quite a fun thing to do on your car. You can buy any design or type of meter or gauge that you like. The installation circuit is the same for all. Some famous brand are Autogauge, Type R and Jasma meters. Above picture is voltmeter and the back of it is the ammeter.
Some meter is provided with the black cap like the one shows above which has been fitted on the meter. If there is no rubber band, you can use double sided tape. Not only were they optional for the SS and other SS-optioned Chevelles but for most years, the gauge option was available on any V8 sport coupe, convertible, and sedan pickup El Camino. Aside from the differences in the speedometer makings, the gauges in the instrument panel were the same for both years. For the tachometer was located just below and to the right of the steering column getting it nickname of ‘knee knocker’ tach due to its location.
For the tachometer was moved to just under the upper dash strip and to the left. This obscured the left blinker so the left blinker was incorporated into the tachometer face earning it the nickname of ‘blinker tach. The aftermarket is now supplying replacement gauges to convert an original non-gauge dash and they work very well. One easy way to tell if the gauges are truly factory or aftermarket is the label on the gauge itself.

What needs to be done to install an ammeter in a car with an alternator? The first issue is that the alternator puts out a lot more current than the original generator, so you need a higher capacity ammeter, like with face scale rather then Then you need to install wires large enough to carry all that current through the ammeter.
Then there is the issue that these high current wires will run through the firewall into the passenger compartment behind the dash, and any possible short in these wares has the potential to pass perhaps more then amps, melt insulation and burn the wiring harness. But if you insist on doing this, consider the following diagram. This diagram shows the original control box to identify the wire terminals. The control box can be removed by simply tying the “A” and “A1” wires together.
Without the ammeter the new ga wire can run directly from the alternator output to the main battery cable at the starter switch. With the ammeter, all of the output current from the alternator has to pass through the ammeter, so the wire between the ammeter and the battery cable must be large enough to handle the new maximum current.
You can do this with two ga wires or one 9-ga wire, or possibly even larger wires if the alternator can put out more than 60 amps.
